SFD1 vs. SFD2 – what is the difference?

Vehicle Diagnostics / SFD / SFD2 / Comments 0

In short:
SFD (vehicle diagnostic protection) blocks coding in modern vehicles.
With SFD1, unlocking is possible; with SFD2, it is no longer possible.

The difference between SFD1 and SFD2 lies mainly in the unlocking process and the available options for retrofits.

SFD1 – unlocking possible

Vehicles with SFD1 can still be coded and upgraded after unlocking.
Unlocking is carried out, for example, via an authorized workshop, ODIS, or tools such as OBD11.

Alternatively, we offer a convenient remote unlocking service – without the need to visit a workshop. Ideal if you want to carry out retrofits quickly and independently:

Perform SFD unlocking online easily

This allows you to remove the SFD lock quickly and easily and implement your retrofit immediately.

Typical models with SFD1 (up to approx. model year 2024):

  • Audi: A3 (8Y), Q4 (F4)
  • Cupra: Born (K11), Leon (KL), Formentor (KM)
  • Seat: Leon (KL)
  • Skoda: Enyaq (5A), Octavia (NX)
  • VW: Golf 8 (CD), Caddy (SB), ID.3 (E11), ID.4 (E21), ID.5 (E39), ID.7 (ED), ID.Buzz (EB), T7 (ST)

Additional models are possible – identifiable by the PR number NI0.

SFD2 – no manual unlocking anymore

With SFD2, manual unlocking is no longer possible.
Changes to control units can only be made via the manufacturer – using:

  • action code
  • or an activation document with license protection

Additional models are also possible – identifiable by the PR numbers NI1, NI7, NI8 or NI9.

What does this mean in practice?

  • SFD1: After unlocking → coding & retrofits possible
  • SFD2: No classic coding anymore → only manufacturer unlocking or alternative solutions

This is crucial for topics such as:
