Retrofitting a parking heater: function, costs and differences explained
A parking heater ensures that your vehicle is preheated before you start – without the engine running. Especially in winter, it provides significantly more comfort while also protecting the engine and interior.
How does a parking heater work in a car?
A parking heater operates independently of the engine and typically uses fuel from the vehicle’s tank (diesel or petrol).
The system heats the coolant and transfers the heat into the interior via the heating system. At the same time, the engine is preheated.
- Warm air inside the vehicle
- De-icing of windows
- Reduced engine wear during cold starts
Depending on the system, control is carried out via:
- Remote control
- App (e.g. Webasto / Eberspächer)
- Timer in the vehicle
What does it cost to retrofit a parking heater?
The cost of retrofitting a parking heater depends on the vehicle, system, and installation effort.
The price generally consists of the following components:
- Parking heater system (e.g. Webasto or Eberspächer)
- Installation and integration into the vehicle
- Control system (remote control or app)
👉 Important: Vehicles with an existing auxiliary heater can be upgraded much more cost-effectively.
Auxiliary heater vs. parking heater – what’s the difference?
An auxiliary heater only supports heating while driving. A parking heater works independently of the engine and can heat the vehicle before the journey begins.
Many vehicles are already equipped with an auxiliary heater and can be upgraded to a parking heater.
Does my vehicle have an auxiliary heater?
Vehicles with an auxiliary heater can be identified by the type plate (engine bay, driver’s door, or fuel cap). Common manufacturers include Webasto and Eberspächer.
Alternatively, this can be checked using the VIN – we are happy to assist you with this.
Can an electric auxiliary heater be upgraded?
Vehicles with an electric auxiliary heater (e.g. Audi A4, A5, Q5, VW Touran, Tiguan) cannot be upgraded to a parking heater.
Is coding required?
Our upgrade kits are designed so that in most cases no coding is required. Exceptions include vehicles such as VW T6 and Amarok from 08/2016 onwards.
When is a parking heater worth it?
A parking heater is particularly worthwhile if:
- You park your vehicle outside in winter
- You regularly drive short distances
- You value comfort and clear windows
👉 It also reduces engine wear during cold starts.
